KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Overland Park police released body camera footage from the officer that helped rescue a woman from an apartment fire Monday.

The fire happened just before 9 p.m. at the Four Seasons Apartment.

Body camera footage shows the officer arriving and being told there is a woman inside of the second-floor apartment that is on fire.

The officer grabs a fire extinguisher and busts down the door, filling the apartment building with smoke.

The video shows the officer making sure the witness is out of harms way and then attempting to rescue the woman that is inside, but the smoke and flames prevent him from getting inside the apartment.

Eventually, fire crews showed up and were able to rescue the woman who was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

The officer was also treated for smoke inhalation. He is heard repeatedly coughing from the smoke on the footage.

Police did not name the officer.

Investigators believe the fire was started because of careless discard of smoking materials. There were no working smoke detectors in the woman's apartment.
