KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A 3-year-old child died Friday morning in a fire at a Blue Springs apartment complex.

Neighbors told 41 Action News the child is younger than five-years-old. An older brother around 8 years-old was believed to be at school at the time of the fire.

“The whole side of the building was just engulfed in flames and the mom, I guess it was the mom, was out there crying get my baby, get my baby and then she just fell to the ground and that’s the last I’ve seen," neighbor Tammy Henson said.

Central Jackson County Fire Protection fire crews were sent to an apartment building at NW 3rd Street and NW Vesper Street just before 11 a.m.

Though the fire was quickly knocked down in 15 minutes, crews still found the child dead inside.

Two adults were also injured and taken to an area hospital, but their injuries weren’t life threatening. Neighbors say they were the parents of the boy who died.

“Hold your kids tighter tonight, tell people that you love them and just let them know," Henson said.

The Red Cross is helping residents of at least eight units that were displaced.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the state’s fire marshals.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
