The transit stop outside of Union Station is about to get a major update.

Construction at the bus and streetcar stop on Main will make it safer and more user friendly.

Union Station representatives said the project is about turning an old bus stop into a place that serves the KC Streetcar, Amtrak and Ride KC buses. They said there's a lot of uneven ground and curbs that are not good for a highly traveled stop.

"The area was designed for vehicles not really pedestrians. Now we will have a nice area where people can wait, hang out. It's a better amenity for pedestrians and people using the streetcar," said Jerry Baber, chief operating officer at Union Station.

Since the streetcar runs at night and on the weekends, they will also add lighting as well as some seating.

A piece of art will be displayed that is part of the streetcar project.

On Monday crews put up a safety fence. About a quarter of the front parking lot is blocked off for workers.

The whole project is expected to be done in eight weeks.
