KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Memorial Day weekend traditionally marks the start of swimming pool season in Kansas City.

But that won't be the case this year.

The Kansas City, Missouri, Parks and Recreation Department announced Friday that water temperatures haven’t risen above 70 degrees yet.

As a result, the city's pools and water parks that were scheduled to open this weekend will remain closed.

Spray grounds will open at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Officials plan to provide an update about when pools will be ready to open on the Parks and Rec website.

Meanwhile, the Unified Governments announced that the Parkwood Pool, 950 Quindaro Blvd. in Kansas City, Kansas, will not open saturday as scheduled.

It's not the weather's fault in this case, but rather "due to the shortage of lifeguards to cover all areas of the pool," the Unified Government said in a release. "The safety of our swimmers and those who visit the pool are our top priority."

Instead, the Parkwood Pool will open at noon on Tuesday. It will operate from noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 2 to 8 p.m. on Sunday.

Spray parks across KCK — at Heathwood, Eisenhower and Pierson parks — will open as scheduled from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday.
