A judge ruled Tuesday that Kansas City does not have to place minimum wage on the April ballot.

The state Supreme Court requires that it be on the next ballot, which would be in August.

Kansas City officials previously said they wanted to wait until the August election to put the measure on the ballot.

Supporters didn't want to wait until then to decide the fate of a proposed $15 an hour minimum wage.

The state Supreme Court has already ruled the issue must be put up for a vote saying the issue must be on a ballot in accordance with the city charter.

If approved, the measure would increase the city’s minimum wage over a five-year period, eventually raising to $15 by 2021.

The federal minimum wage is $7.25 an hour and hasn't increased since 2009.

The Kansas City Board of Election Commissioners said the timing of the decision is crucial as ballots need to be printed as soon as possible. The ballots would have been sent to the printer this past Thursday, but staff has been waiting for a judge to issue the decision.
