Kansas City firefighters put out a fire at a duplex near 79th Street and State Line Road overnight.
Investigators said a man put out a cigarette and then went to bed, but the cigarette wasn’t put out completely. Burnt embers went up from the ashtray and caught the back side of the structure, engulfing one of the walls. The smoke detector woke the man up and he got out of the house.
The fire damaged one side of the duplex. The other side was not damaged.
Officials said no one was hurt in the fire.
