KANSAS CITY, Mo. — There was deep sorrow on the banks of Indian Creek in South Kansas City as divers recovered the body of Trevion Mcafee Monday afternoon.

When Jairus Poole learned what happened to his boyfriend from a friend, the world stopped.

"The first thing she said to me – she said, 'They can't find him,'" Poole said. "When they said that, that hit me so hard – like really broke down. I couldn't even walk because like, that's the love of my life."

That was cut short when Mcafee went to the creek near West 103rd Street and State Line Road with a group of friends Sunday night , a strong current swept him under.

"One of the girls tried to save him," Poole said. "She had his head the first time and then after that the current came in, it came and basically she lost him."

Firefighters searched for Mcafee for more than four hours before bad weather moved in Sunday night. Crews picked up the search Monday morning.

"There is no reason this should happen to him," Poole said

Although Mcafee didn't know how to swim, the 19-year-old familiar was with the particular area he was in along Indian Creek.

"What we do is we get in the water and we just take pictures," Poole said. "And then after we take pictures we get out of the water."

The tragic accident took the life of a young man who family said had a zest for life.

"Very uplifting no matter what he was going through," Christopher Mcafee, the victim's cousin, said. "What he had been through, he always found a way to lift everybody up."
