OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — She thought it was going to be a normal football Friday night. But for one Blue Valley Northwest Student, it quickly changed with a surprise a year in the making.

Friday night First Sgt. Charles Porter surprised his daughter, Morgan, before kickoff of the Blue Valley Northwest football game. He just returned home from serving a year at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

"Just being back, it's a blessing. I miss my family tremendously and I'm excited to see my daughter," said First Sgt. Porter before the surprise.

During the pregame ceremonies, Sgt. Porter hid behind three Husky mascots. Moments later he emerged to loud cheers by the crowd. Once his daughter noticed, she went running into his arms.

"I always watch videos of it and I always wonder how that would feel. It's good," said Sgt. Porter's daughter Morgan Porter after the surprise.

Porter's wife teaches in the district and helped set up the surprise for their daughter.
