KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Saturday night's victory for the Chiefs was almost a major loss for some fans.

A fire broke out in the parking lot near gate 6 at Arrowhead Stadium.

Jeremiah Matney and his cousin Eric were tailgating across the street when they saw the flames erupt just before halftime.

As the fire inched closer and closer to cars and buses, Matney said they decided to run over and stomp out some of the flames.

Once first responders arrived, firefighters were able to put out the rest of the fire.

Of course, besides the burned grass near the parking lot, some fans may not have even known just how close their cars were to disaster.

There was a brand new Corvette and a brand new Mustang GTE and then two buses. I was like that's a big loss. Merry Christmas to whoever," Matney said.

Matney and his cousin had a couple of minor burns on their ankles and hands, but the only total losses were the shoes they were wearing, which were completely melted.

We reached out the Kansas City Fire Department and are waiting to hear back on the cause of the fire.
