Former Kansas City councilman calls for stronger KCI security

As councilman, Terry Riley wasn't ready for a new airport.

"One thing I think we can look at now is doing possibly some renovations to the airport so we can take care of some security concerns," said Riley.

The new scrutiny comes after the now former councilman flew into KCI within 24 hours of the deadly attack at Istanbul's airport.

“It was shocking. That they ran in and did something like this. Then of course you start thinking about at home. You start thinking about you traveling. You start thinking about the travel season that you and your family usually have, and all those concerns came up,” said Riley.

Riley's concern is how close the dropoff point at KCI terminals are to gates and planes.

“It’s in such close proximity. You can walk from your car and walk right in and it creates a security concern,” said Riley.

In a statement, a representative for Kansas City's Aviation Department said, "KCI Airport Police and its partners continue to maintain a high level of security awareness to ensure that the airport is safe for everyone and we are prepared to address security concerns as necessary."
