KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Funeral arrangements have been released for a long-serving member of the Independence Police Department who was killed in a crash last week in Gladstone.

Sergeant Jason Young, 48, died on Thursday, Jan. 2, in the crash.

A visitation for Young’s death is scheduled from 5:30 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 7, at Vineyard Church, North Campus, 12300 Northwest Arrowhead Trafficway in Kansas City, Missouri. Funeral services, which will include full military and police honors, will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 8, also at the church.

In addition to his 24-year career in the Independence Police Department, Young served as an officer with the United States Coast Guard. In 2006, he enlisted in the United States Coast Guard Reserve, where he earned the rank of lieutenant commander and deployed to Guantanamo Bay and Kuwait.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Truman Heartland Foundation in Young’s memory. All donations will be used for medical supplies in Independence Police Department’s tactical unit.
