Grain Valley schools go on lockdown during police search

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Two Grain Valley schools went on lockdown Thursday afternoon as police searched for a burglary suspect nearby, according to police and school officials.

Shortly before 2 p.m., officers told administrators they were looking for the suspect, according to Deputy Superintendent Brad Welle.

Grain Valley police said officers received a call about a burglary in the 1000 block of Cross Creek Drive. A homeowner told police that the suspect ran south into a wooded area.

Police searched the area for the suspect but did not find anyone.

Stony Point Elementary School and South Middle School both went on lockdown during the search.

Police told administrators there was no reason to believe the suspect was armed, Well said.

A police spokesperson said students at the schools were never in danger.

The district emailed parents at both schools to inform them about the lockdowns.

Police were present at both schools as they dismissed.
