Grandview leaders to vote on funding emergency repairs to flood-damaged infrastructure

Vote would spend about $200,000

On Tuesday, city leaders in Grandview will discuss paying for emergency repairs after this summer's floods overcame bridges, created sinkholes and damaged culverts.

The Board of Aldermen are expected to vote on a plan that calls on spending about $200,000 right away.

Public Works Director Dennis Randolph said between $120,000 and $140,000 of the funds will go toward immediate street and storm sewer repairs. The rest of the funds will go toward monitoring and inspecting bridges and culverts.

“Hopefully we won't find any problems,” Randolph said. “But it is money well spent because it's strictly safety. A bridge falling is not what we want.”

Crews will inspect the bridge on Merrywood Drive near St. Andrews Drive. Floodwater washed away some earth from underneath the sidewalk leading to the bridge.

The public works director said the city can pay for part of these fixes from its budget and with money from a capital improvement sales tax Grandview voters approved last month.

“We won't do all the work overnight,” Randolph cautioned. “We've got work we'll probably be doing for the next two or three years, if not longer to adjust our system, build new sewers here or there and things like that.”

The Board of Aldermen meet at 7 p.m. to discuss the proposal.
