Gun found in student's backpack at Central Academy of Excellence

Posted

Officers found a gun in a student’s backpack at Central Academy of Excellence on Tuesday.

When the student entered the school, a Kansas City Public School security sergeant was searching students’ backpacks. As she grabbed the student’s bag, she noticed one side of the bag was heavy, according to police.

The sergeant asked a secondary officer if the bag had been searched. The student said yes, but the officer said no.

Police said when the sergeant opened the bag she found a revolver in the backpack. The student was taken to the principal’s office.

The student said he found the gun walking home from school on Monday, Jan. 30, and forgot it was in his backpack when he came to school.

KC police said the revolver was loaded with five live rounds and one spent shell casing. A computer check of the gun’s serial number responded back with no record, according to police.
