KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Whether you’re a parent getting ready to take your kids trick-or-treating or you're someone who doesn’t participate in Halloween at all, everyone needs to be aware of the dangers that come with Halloween night.

According to Safe Kids Kansas, kids are more than twice as likely to be hit and killed by a vehicle on Halloween night as it compares to any other day of the year.

Popular trick-or-treating hours are from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., but if you’re driving on Kansas City streets October 31, you should keep these tips in mind all day:

Driving Safety Tips for Halloween

  • Be alert – especially in residential neighborhoods
  • Take extra time to look for kids at intersections
  • Turn headlights on earlier
  • Be careful pulling in and out of driveways
  • Eliminate all distractions in your car

If you’re a parent getting ready to take your kid trick or treating, or think they are old enough to go alone, Safe Kids Kansas has a list of things you should make sure they are aware of:

Walking Safety Tips for Halloween

  • Only cross the street at corners using crosswalks
  • Look both ways before crossing, especially on Halloween night
  • Watch for cars backing up or turning
  • Put electronic devices down when crossing the street

Safe Kids Kansas said telling your kids to establish eye contact with drivers before they cross the street helps assure that the driver sees them and will wait for them to get to the other side

When it comes to children’s costumes:

  • Make sure it’s the right size to prevent trips & falls
  • Use makeup instead of masks so nothing is blocking vision

And if the dark really has you worried about safety, there’s a few things you can do to make sure your kids are seen this Halloween.

Make kids more visible

  • Add reflective tape to costumes or bags
  • Make them carry a glow stick or flashlight
