The Great Plans SPCA sees more pets coming into their doors lost during any other time of the year.

"I do know in the past usually the day after the fourth of July we will have an influx of pets that come in," said Emily Hawkins.

The number one mistake Hawkins says pet owners make is bringing their dogs to see fireworks.

“They are going to have that tendency bolt and they'll be more nervous and scared during that time then enjoying that time with their family," she said.

There are things you can do to create a safe place for animals who are afraid of fireworks.

  • Turn on a TV or radio to create white noise and distract from the sound of fireworks
  • Close the blinds so animals don’t see the bring lights
  • Put animals is a separate room away from all the commotion

People can also by a thunder jacket at the Great Plans SPCA for around $20.
