KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Five of the 10 most crash-prone locations in Kansas City, Missouri, so far in 2020 are in the south part of town, including two spots less than a mile apart.

Interstate 435 and Holmes Road, where road construction forces traffic to merge, is the top location for wrecks to date in 2020, according to information compiled by KCPD.

I-435 and Wornall Road, less than a mile farther west, ranks as the 10th most crash-prone location — and one of eight on the list where rear-end crashes or crashes caused by inattentive driving are the most common.

The I-435 interchange with Interstate 70, which is another location inundated with construction, has seen the second-most crashes in KCMO so far this year.

Three of the next four locations are along U.S. 71 with No. 3 being in the vicinity of the East 75th Street exit followed by the Bannister Road exit at No. 4 and the East 55th Street exit at No. 6.

Interstate 470 near Blue Ridge Boulevard checks in No. 5, while Front Street and I-435 ranks No. 7 just ahead of Front Street and Interstate 35 at No. 8.

U.S. 71 near Red Bridge Road is the ninth-most wreck-prone location so far in 2020 in KCMO.

The primary cause of crashes near I-435 and Front Street is lane violations, one of two in the top 10 where inattention isn’t the main culprit.

KCPD’s best advice for avoiding becoming a statistic: slow down and “get off your phones,” according to the department’s official Twitter account.
