KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A motorcycle officer with the Independence Police Department was hospitalized Thursday morning after being involved in a crash.

The officer, part of the department’s selective enforcement unit, was on East Truman Road near South Swope Drive just before 8 a.m. when he crashed with another vehicle.

The officer was taken to an area hospital for treatment. His injuries are not considered life-threatening.

During an investigation of the incident, police determined the driver likely was impaired.

Devan C. Hindt, 27, of Sugar Creek, was charged later Thursday with driving while intoxicated and causing a vehicular accident involving an Independence police officer in Jackson County court.

Hindt allegedly turned in front of the officer's motorcycle.

The officer suffered an injured hip and road rash to other parts of his body, according to a statement from the Jackson County Prosecutor's Office.

Hindt was arrested and is being held on a $30,000 bond.
