Independence police resolve hostage situation; suspect in custody

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Independence police peacefully resolved a hostage situation Sunday afternoon and have a suspect in custody.

Police responded to the area of East 35th Terrace and South Kendall Drive on a disturbance call around 12:30 p.m. that escalated to an armed barricaded subject who had a hostage.

An Independence Police Department spokesperson said the standoff lasted about three hours, which included negotiators speaking to the armed individual.

Tactical officers ultimately entered the home, according the spokesperson, at which time the hostage was rescued and the suspect was taken into custody.

Police have not yet released information about the individuals involved in the incident.
