KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Recent legislation approved by the Jackson County Legislature aims to make getting a jury summons a little less cringeworthy.

Starting Monday, jurors participating on a trial jury or grand jury will receive $18 per day.

The bump in pay is a 300% increase from the old rate of $6 per day. Jurors will continue to receive reimbursement of 7 cents per mile for travel.

Jurors who report for service but aren’t selected will get $6 per day.

A release issued Monday said the county offered one of the lowest juror pay rates in the state.

“It is the responsibility of all citizens who are summoned to serve as jurors, and no one serves seeking financial reward,” Presiding Judge David M. Byrn said in the release. “However, no one should endure significant financial hardship as a result of serving as a juror.”
