A judge is expected to hand down a ruling soon to decide when Kansas City voters will see a minimum wage initiative on the ballot.

The city wants to wait until the August election to put the measure on the ballot. However, those behind the petition would like to vote on it in April.

The measure would increase the city's minimum wage over a five-year period, eventually raising it to $15 by 2021.

The Kansas City Board of Election Commissioners said the timing of the decision is crucial as ballots need to be printed as soon as possible. The ballots would have been sent to the printer this past Thursday, but staff has been waiting for a judge to issue the decision.

The courts are closed on Monday for a federal holiday so the earliest a ruling can come down is Tuesday.
