"Loving is saying, I'm going to meet your need," pastor George Westlake III said. That's exactly what Sheffield Family Life Center is working to do the first Saturday of every month.
The church gives clothes and bags of groceries to families in the community. Some of them leave with their baskets full.
“Where there's a need, you need to step up and meet it," said Westlake.
Some people began lining up for food the night before the giveaway.
Volunteers show up hours before the event to get everything ready. Westlake said efforts like this build an effective church.
"I think churches and Christians have given Jesus a bad wrap," said Westlake. "We've given him the wrong image because what Jesus did was he met people's physical need and spiritual need. That's what he was about.”
Operation Love Outreach serves between 300 to 500 families a month.
"This is not about the name of our church. It's about helping people and actually representing God and Jesus Christ properly," Westlake said.
On June 18, the chruch hopes to exceed that number with an event called, Convoy Of Hope.
The church will offer food, hair cuts, a health clinic, immunizations, job placement and live entertainment. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This event is free of charge.
