KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Bonded by beards and motivated through mustaches, theKansas City Beard and Moustache Club(KCBMC) shares an appreciation of facial hair and community service.
The club was established in October 2011. Scott Kellough, one of the first members of the club, said it all started around the time a television show called “Whisker Wars” debuted.
“Several random people that didn’t really know each other kind of all had the same idea and somehow we all came together and it just happened,” Kellough said.
All people are welcomed in the club.
“Facial hair is not required to be a member of the club,” said Clay Jarratt, KCBMC Event Coordinator. “We have people that have all manners of facial hair from no facial hair to stubble, mustaches, beards and we have ladies that are obviously welcomed in the club as well.”
The club isn’t just about getting together to oil beards and sip brews. KCBMC does charitable work throughout the community that includes highway cleanup, work with veterans, and more. KCBMC recently received the Food and Fund Drive Support award from Harvesters, a regional food bank.
Mike Merry has been a member for six years. He’s been growing his current beard for six months which now chest length. Not only does the widower come for the good company but likes making a difference.
"At my age, I’m cramming for the finals now and I want to make it sure I make it on it," Merry jokingly said. "This has been a good vehicle for that."
The club has 30 active members and 900 members on their Facebook page.
