KANSAS CITY, Kan. — A Kansas City, Kansas, police officer shot and killed an armed suspect early Sunday morning. Police have identified the suspect as 19-year-old Leonel Lozoya-Esparza of Kansas City, Kansas.
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation says officers were called to the 500 block of Ohio Avenue at 12:27 a.m. for a noise complaint, then again 20 minutes later on a report of shots fired.
When they arrived, officers say they made contact with Lozoya-Esparza. Officers issued verbal commands ordering him to drop the weapon.
Lozoya-Esparza failed to comply with officers' commands and turned toward them while holding the firearm.
That's when a KCKPD officer shot and killed the suspect.
No officers were injured in the incident, according to KBI.
KBI is investigating the shooting, in accordance with department policy.
This incident remains under investigation. KBI says the final report will take weeks to complete.
