KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Christmas came early for the Kansas City Zoo.

They’re welcoming Cairo, a 3-year-old hippopotamus from the Gulf Breeze Zoo in Florida, to KC.

She’s completed the quarantine process and began exploring her new habitat this week.

Cairo is about half the size of Liberty, her new counterpart already living at the zoo.

She’ll celebrate her fourth birthday August 18, probably by chomping on some of her favorite food — romaine lettuce.

The zoo said Cairo has “a curious but cautious personality and a huge appetite.”

The zoo is open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends through Labor Day.
