Thanks to the hard work of the Kansas City Sports Commission and its partners, 6 more NCAA sporting events are coming to the area.
Kathi Nelson with the KCSC says they’re prepared.
“There are so many different venues here we’re able to utilize, which makes our bids that much stronger because we’re such a diverse venue city,” said Nelson.
Out of 55 bids Kansas City vied for, the city received 6. The Division 2 Football Finals 2018 – 2021, Men’s Basketball Regionals 2019, and Women’s Bowling Finals 2021.
Nelson hoped for more events, but is still very pleased with the outcome. And the real work begins now.
“We have to make sure the venues are booked, the hotel rooms blocked and then we start working," said Nelson. "This is business, so when it comes right down to this, if we’re awarded basketball, that means there’s more beer being poured at Power and Light District. That means more people parking their cars at parking lots across town, more people jumping in a taxi cab or Uber. It’s big business for all of us.”
The Kansas City Sports Commission estimates these 6 events will pump more than $27 million into the local economy.
