Torrential rains have flooded southern Missouri, and now dozens of families are homeless. Volunteers from Kansas City and local agencies are headed to the affected areas to help.

80 homes in a Neosho, Missouri subdivision have flood damage. Workers from Kansas City with Heart to Heart International left for there Sunday night.

Brian McDonnell is part of that crew. He and others handed out hygiene kits and water to families in need.

"We've had at least 60 residents up there who do not have any water," said McDonell.

American Red Cross volunteers left Kansas City and headed to Springfield, Missouri Monday morning.

"We will be feeding. We will be driving around trying to feed the people that we see and reaching out as much as we can," said Patty Patterson, who volunteered for the assignment with the American Red Cross.

This is the first crew to go out in an emergency response truck, but they may not be the last.

The two volunteers will partner with other agencies in Springfield to help assess the need.

"We are also in the process of recruiting volunteers to go down to help in the shelters, to help with damage assessment, to help with feeding and any other areas that they need to use them," said Diane Fodness, a disaster program manager for the American Red Cross.

Heart to Heart International plans to send a second team and another truck on Tuesday.
