KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A nearly 24-hour standoff at a Kansas City, Missouri, hotel ended Friday afternoon when the subject died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

According to police, an armed suicidal man barricaded himself inside a hotel room at the Days Inn near 86th Street and Hillcrest Road shortly before 1 p.m. on Thursday.

Hotel staff had called police, because the adult male had overstayed his checkout time.

Upon arrival, officers made contact with the man, who was alone and armed in the room.

Negotiators and tactical teams were called to the scene, including officers with crisis intervention training. KCPD managed to make contact with the man several times, but he refused requests to come out for medical treatment.

After hearing the sound of a gunshot around 12:40 p.m. on Friday, officers entered the room and emergency responders pronounced the man dead.

"KCPD strives to resolve any standoff peacefully and we mourn any loss of life," a KCPD spokesperson said in an email with details about the incident.

Police remained at the scene well into the afternoon, processing the scene.
