KANSAS CITY, Mo. — If a proposed rule change is approved in Lawrence, Kansas, penalties and fines for first- and second-time marijuana possession could go way down.

Under the proposal, people 18 years and older who are arrested with less than 32 grams of marijuana for the first or second time could face a fine of $1.

The arrest would still carry $63 in court costs.

Based on 2017 data, the number of cases that could apply to the changes would be 244 cases.

Currently, the minimum fine for such cases is $200, plus the $63 in court costs.

Those arrested for the third time are considered state offenders with more significant penalties.

The ordinance also would not change fines for drug paraphernalia.

Lawrence city commissioners are scheduled to consider the ordinance during their meeting at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday.
