KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The City of Lenexa has a new chief of police.

Deputy Chief Dawn Layman will move up to serve as police chief after the retirement of Chief Thomas Hongslo.

According to the city, Layman has been with the department for 27 years. Prior to her long tenure in Lenexa, she served as an officer in various Pennsylvania departments.

“I am certainly humbled to continue to serve the Lenexa community in this new role,” Layman said in a release. “I am grateful for the mentorship and opportunities provided to me by my predecessors Chief Hongslo and Chief Hanson during my career. I am honored to lead our agency into the future and continue to work alongside some of the most dedicated and professional men and women in law enforcement. The members of the Lenexa Police Department are committed to providing exceptional service on a daily basis to all.”

The city said Layman's work with the department has been integral to the implementation of body-worn cameras, a license plate recognition program, a robust traffic camera network, a public-private security camera partnership and essential crime analysis software.

Layman begins her new role on Dec. 18.
