KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Diana Rightmire is now among hundreds of thousands of people waiting to see what Hurricane Harvey will do to the Lone Star state.

The Liberty resident is visiting her sister and brother-in-law in Crosby, Texas, which is only 35 miles north of Galveston Bay.

"I have never experienced anything like this before," Rightmire said.

She told 41 Action News winds were picking up Friday but nowhere near what Harvey is packing, wind speeds of up to 130 miles per hour.

"My sister's house has hurricane proof windows. Before they got those they would have been out here putting plywood up," Rightmire said.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has issued disaster declarations in 30 counties. Some cities are being ordered to evacuate but, as of Friday, Crosby isn't one of them.

Rightmire said her family made sure to top off the gas tank because there are some gas stations running out of feul.

"We've stocked up on water, we've got a generator ready to put to use - so we're just hunkering down," Rightmire said.

She flew in on Southwest, and the airline hasn't cancelled her flight out just yet.

"I'm supposed to fly back to Kansas City next Tuesday but I think that may be one of the worst days of this storm so I'm probably not going to be home until Wednesday maybe even Thursday at this point," Rightmire said.

Despite the inconvenience, Rightmire said she just hopes everyone is able to weather the storm.

"I just hope that everybody who is in the direct path of the storm is going to be safe," Rightmire said.
