KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A 26-year-old motocross rider died after suffering critical injuries Friday during the Nitro Arenacross Nationals at Hale Arena.

Police said Clayton Haney, from Excelsior Springs, Missouri, was pronounced dead at an area hospital early Saturday.

Officers with the Kansas City, Missouri, Police Department responded to the accident that occurred during the competition, which started at 7 p.m.

According to police, Haney was participating in the event and riding a KTM off-road style motorcycle on a dirt track. At a curve in the course, he went off the track and struck a cinderblock wall.

A witness said that Haney, who was wearing a helmet, lost control at a hairpin turn after a big jump on the course and jumped off the course before the injury.
