KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A metro area Macy’s department store will soon be closing.

Prairie Village Mayor Eric Mikkelson told 41 Action News that the Macy’s in Prairie Village Shopping Center, located at 4000 W. 71st St., “will be winding down and closing over 90 days.”

First Washington Realty informed the city Monday of the closure.

A Macy's spokesperson said in a statement Monday night a clearance sale at the store will begin soon.

The sale is expected to last about 8 to 12 weeks.

Regular, non-seasonal employees who were unable to be placed at other Macy's stores in the area will be eligible for severance, including outplacement help, according to the statement.

"The decision to close a store is always a difficult one, but Macy's is proud to have served the Prairie Village community over the past 62 years and we look forward to continuing to do so at nearby Macy's stores, including Macy's Town Center Plaza, Macy's Oak Park, Macy's Summit Fair, Macy's Independence Center and Macy's Metro North Mall.''
