KANSAS CITY, Mo. — An Independence man faces several charges, including second-degree murder, for causing a crash that killed an innocent motorist Wednesday.

Jackson County prosecutors charged Da’qon Sipple, 22, with one count each of second-degree murder, unlawful use of a weapon and armed criminal action in the death of Mari McElyea.

Mcelyea was driving southbound on Sterling Avenue around 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday in Independence when her car was allegedly struck by Sipple, who police say was traveling at a high rate of speed and allegedly ran a red light on westbound U.S. 24.

According to court documents, Sipple allegedly shot into a car occupied by a former girlfriend at a residence in Independence before leaving the scene. The ex-girlfriend then allegedly chased Sipple until the crash.

MceElyea died at the scene.

Sipple was taken to an area hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash. Prosecutors have requested a $250,000 bond.
