KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A Kansas City, Missouri, staple is planning to expand with a new restaurant on the Country Club Plaza.

McGonigle's Market is exploring the possibility of opening a cafe in Unity Temple, 707 W. 47th St., in the space formerly occupied by the vegetarian restaurant Eden Alley Cafe. Owner Mike McGonigle said the business is trying to work out a deal with Unity Temple and looking into renovation costs.

Unity Temple is currently working to assess the impact that construction of the new Nordstrom store, which is set to open in 2021, will have on the space. The two-story, 122,000-square-foot store will sit at the end of the western terminus of Nichols Road in a building formerly occupied by The Capitol Grille and Bank of America.

Plaza officials said Thursday in an emailed statement that they are working closely with Unity Temple.

“We are excited about Nordstrom coming to the Plaza and the support we have received from the broader Kansas City community surrounding the project,” the statement said. “We have worked closely with Unity Temple and always strive to be a good neighbor. At this point, it would not be appropriate to comment further on this private resolution matter.”

McGonigle said that if a deal is reached with Unity Temple for the new cafe, renovation would take three to six months before the cafe could open.

Eden Alley closed in September after more than 24 years. It did not give any specific reasons for the closure at the time.
