A patient at Children’s Mercy Hospital got a very special visit from the Kansas City Fire Department on Wednesday.
Mason Guccione looked out his third story window to find a group of firefighters wave to him as the ladder rose to his level.
Scott Guccione, Mason's father, shared the moment on a Facebook post. He said members of the Springfield Fire Department called the KCFD to set it up.
According to a GoFundMe page, Mason was diagnosed at birth with a double outlet right ventricle. Since then he has had dozens of surgeries.
As if seeing the ladder outside his window wasn’t cool enough, Mason was then greeted by three engines, one truck company and a battalion. The group brought Mason a traditional helmet complete with a personalized shield.
Mason also received a letter from Fire Chief Paul Berardi congratulating Mason on his appointment to Battalion 102.
The cherry on top of a terrific day was talking with the Chief over the radio and a round of high fives to all the visiting firefighters.
“The brotherhood is alive and well and my family and I are so proud to be apart of it,” said Scott. “Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts! You made his day for sure.”
According to a Facebook post made by Scott on March 21, Mason is no longer a heart transplant candidate due to his current condition. His parents are arranging to bring him home and place him on hospice care.
