KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Missouri officials on Monday said they requested a federal disaster declaration for the second time this year.

The second declarationwould cover 41 counties that experienced tornadoes and flooding from spring storms.

Preliminary damage assessments conducted in the state identified 953 homes and 125 businesses that were destroyed or sustained major damage after April 29.

The state has requested individual assistance be made available to affected residents in Adair, Andrew, Atchison, Barton, Boone, Buchanan, Callaway, Carroll, Chariton, Christian, Clark, Cole, Cooper, Dallas, Douglas, Gasconade, Greene, Grundy, Harrison, Hickory, Holt, Howard, Jackson, Jasper, Jefferson, Laclede, Lafayette, Lewis, Lincoln, Livingston, Macon, Miller, Osage, Pike, Platte, Polk, Pulaski, Saline, St. Charles, St. Louis and Ste. Genevieve counties.

Public assistance allows affected residents to seek federal help with temporary housing, repairs, replacement of belongings, vehicles and other expenses that stem from the storms and flooding.

Once damage assessments are completed, the state plans to request public assistance for 64 counties, including Andrew, Atchison, Bates, Buchanan, Caldwell, Carroll, Daviess, Henry, Holt, Lafayette, Livingston, Nodaway, Linn, Ray and Saline counties.

Those who need help should call 211 for assistance or visit the 211 website.

In May, President Donald Trump declared a major disaster for 13 Missouri counties damaged by March flooding after Gov. Mike Parson requested the declaration in April, before a second round of flooding in the state.
