LEE'S SUMMIT, Mo. — As the November general election creeps closer, some officials are attempting to reassure the public that every vote will be counted.

“We've done better than any state in this country,” Missouri Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft said Tuesday when asked about a lawsuit filed last week, which claims the state has made it harder for some to vote on Nov. 3.

“I find it somewhat weird that people would say you've given us an additional way to vote and somehow that's disenfranchising us,” he said. “That doesn't make sense.”

The lawsuit, filed September 13 by the ACLU, claims widespread confusion surrounding absentee voting and the use of a notary will limit some voters from participating.

Aschroft called the lawsuit "frivolous," noting that his office has conducted three successful elections amid the pandemic.

“We're gonna have a fourth one like that,” he said.
