KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Missouri Department of Transportation is transforming the I-435 and I-70 interchange over the next year and a half.

Thursday and Friday, MoDOT will close the right lane of I-70 EB from 18th Street to Cleveland Avenue from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., so crews can place detour notices and equipment in the area.

Here's a look at MoDOT's scheduled closures next week:

  • Sunday, March 10
    • Beginning at 6 a.m., crews will have various single lane closures along eastbound I-70 between Lister Avenue and I-435 until approximately 3 p.m.
    • Beginning at 7 a.m., crews will CLOSE the eastbound I-70 loop ramp to northbound I-435 until approximately Dec. 2020. This was originally scheduled for Thursday, March 14.
      • The signed detour will use US 40 starting near 31st Street to northbound I-435.
    • Also beginning at 7 a.m., crews will close the eastbound I-70 exit ramp to Manchester Trafficway. This was originally scheduled for Monday, March 11.
  • Monday, March 11
    • Beginning at 9 a.m., crews will close the Manchester Tafficway on-ramp to westbound I-70.
    • These ramps will be closed until December 2020.
  • Tuesday, March 12
    • Starting at 9 a.m. until approximately 3 p.m., crews will have various lane closures along north and southbound Manchester Trafficway so crews can reconfigure the off-ramps from I-70.
  • Wednesday, March 13
    • Beginning at 8 p.m., crews will close the westbound I-70 loop ramp to southbound I-435 until approximately December 2020. This closure has been delayed to Monday, March 18 at 8 p.m. due to inclement weather.
      • The detour will be westbound I-70 to Manchester to turn around on eastbound I-70 to southbound I-435.
    • Beginning at 8 p.m. until approximately 5 a.m. the following morning, there will be a double lane closure along westbound I-70 from Stadium Drive to Manchester Trafficway.
  • Thursday, March 14
    • Beginning at 9 a.m. until approximately 3 p.m., crews will be installing temporary barrier along westbound I-70. There is the potential for various single lane closures during this time.
    • Also beginning at 9 a.m., crews will close the right lane of westbound I-70 in the vicinity of I-435 until approximately 3 p.m.
    • Starting at 7 p.m., until approximately 5 a.m. the following morning, crews will have various single lane closures along southbound I-435 at I-70.

The new configuration will be a partial turbine, also known as a whirlpool interchange.

Bridges will be replaced, left exits will be removed and improvements to the loop ramp configuration will be made.

MoDOT stated after the I-70 Environmental Impact Study, it determined this work will relieve congestion in that area.

The $47 million project is fully funded by MoDOT.

Emery Sapp and Sons is the main contractor on the project.

Construction is expected to be completed by December 2020.
