KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- You may notice some slower traffic over the weekend near the downtown loop.

MoDOT will be doing some roadside erosion work. Engineers tell us it's pretty standard after a major project like the I-670 repaving project.

"At the conclusion of a normal project we go in, we check everything and make sure everything was built according to the way it needed to be," said James Phlum, Resident Engineer of MoDOT. "While looking at the southeast corner of the downtown loop, we just found some minor touch up stuff that we need to go in and fix."

MoDOT will be mainly working off the roadway and behind guardrails, moving dirt and grading.

"If you don't do this type of maintenance and make sure that the water is getting where it needs to and then off the highways, it can start eroding the roadbeds and the side slopes next to it which could present a danger years down the road," said Phlum. "We just have to go back in, raise the dirt up a little bit more, just to make sure that the water drains into the drop in like it's suppose to."

CLOSURES:

  • Charlotte Street ramp to Eastbound I-70: CLOSED @ 7 am on Friday
  • 13th Street ramp: CLOSED @ 7:30 pm on Friday
  • WB I-70 from the Benton Curve to the I-670 split: Two inside lanes closed @ 7:30 pm Friday
  • WB I-670 from split to 13th St: CLOSED @ 7:30 pm Friday
  • The closures mean traffic will not be able to access WB I-670 from WB I-70 on the southeast corner of the loop. Drivers are suppose to use the north side of the loop to get around the closure.
  • US-71 drivers will be able to get onto WB I-670.

"This will have an effect really on the entire region, so using our Scout system and the boards are on the side of the road, just pay attention to the boards in the area," said Phlum. "They will be warning vehicles of the work on I-70, where they can expect it, even delays and things like that."

While the construction schedule has the closures lasting through 5 o'clock Monday morning, Phlum said they hope to be finished by Sunday.
