KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, which is based in Kansas City, Missouri, announced Tuesday that it will allow its student-athletes to be compensated.
NAIA President and CEO Jim Carr made the announcement, which paves the way for more than 77,000 student-athletes to be compensated for use of their name, image and likeness.
The legislation also allows students to receive compensation for promoting commercial products, enterprises or make public appearances, and to reference their participation in intercollegiate athletics as part of that participation.
“This is a landmark day for the NAIA, and we are happy to lead the way in providing additional opportunities for our student-athletes,” Carr said in a release. “The time was right for the NAIA to ensure our student-athletes can use their name, image and likeness in the same ways as all other college students.”
