KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Several homes on the 5400 block of E. 27th Terrace will be getting some renovation love.

A local nonprofit, Tikkun-KC, is transforming eyesore houses into beautiful homes.

Tikkun-KC founder Larry Myer said this will provide deserving, low-income residents an opportunity to become homeowners and create a better neighborhood.

“When you see kids running around and people outside, that's when you know your work's been for a good cause,” Myer said.

Myer said they’ve already cleared out roughly 10,000 pounds of trash on that block. While it can get tough, he said seeing the finished product makes it worth it.

“If you look at the picture of the house before it started and you look at it now, that's why I get excited,” Myer said. “Cause once you're finished with it, you forget where you started out at.”

Johnny Burris, who’s lived on the block for more than 40 years, said he’s excited to see the changes in his neighborhood.

“I'm 71 years old. I might not live another 15 years, 10 years, but at least if I can see this neighborhood get changed before I die, I will know that I helped change that neighborhood,” Burris said. “That's a good feeling.”

Papa John, as he’s called by several of his neighbors, said knowing his street will soon become a neighborhood again is a great feeling.

“It feels great because I live here,” he said. “This is my home.”

Myer said several of these homes were on the city’s dangerous building list, getting ready to be demolished. But now that they’re being renovated it saves money for taxpayers.
