A former Olathe teacher under investigation since May now faces felony charges alleging he had an unlawful sexual relationship with a student.
Court documents obtained by 41 Action News Friday confirm Michael Jasiczek, 42, faces three counts of unlawful sexual relations. The documents allege the crimes took place between January and May of this year with a student who was more than 16 years old. According to the documents, the two had consensual sex.
The age of consent is 16 in Kansas, but the law prohibits teachers from having sexual relationships with their students.
Jasiczek, put on leave May 4, was a social science teacher and assistant football coach at Olathe South High School. His social media posts seem to indicate he was as least partly involved in the school's track and strength training programs as well.
Officers arrested him Friday after nearly two months of investigation, and a judge set his bond at $250,000. His next court appearance was set for the afternoon of July 3.
"I liked him as a teacher. It was a good class," said Tre Adger, who graduated from Olathe South this year.
"He was very personal," said Trent Wilkes. "Sometimes you could notice him getting too close."
According to these students, Jasiczek interacted with many students on social media, such as Twitter. Now, they say that should have been a red flag.
"He kind of told us how to treat people, but I don't know if he ended up following the rules for us," said Matthew White, who also graduated Olathe South.
Jasiczek made his first court appearance on Monday. The judge reduced his bond to $150,000. He remains in the Johnson County Jail. His next court appearance will be on July 13.
