Operation Thanksgiving to provide holiday basics to metro families

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Della Lamb puts the “giving” in Thanksgiving…and they’ve been doing so since 1897.

Tuesday, November 21, was the happy culmination of this year’s Operation Thanksgiving.

According to Jonathan Hyde of Della Lamb, the call goes out for contributions and the search for families begins just after Labor Day.

This year, they’re hoping to provide a healthy Thanksgiving meal for at least 1,300 Kansas City metro families.

It is not an easy task, though. For example, this time around, they’ve faced a shortage of turkeys, apple pie mixings, gravy packets and other holiday essentials.

You can still help, though, by giving online. A $35 dollar contribution provides one family with all they need to celebrate the special day.

Early on a chilly Tuesday morning, people were lining up to receive a turkey, potatoes, stuffing mix, pie crust and everything else many of us are blessed enough to take for granted.

After today, the folks at Della Lamb will catch their breath before moving on to the next mission: Operation Santa Claus!

They say the original Della Lamb, for whom the organization was named, was a force of nature. If it needed to be done, Della would do it.

Somewhere, Della Lamb is smiling as this important day of giving is getting done!
