KANSAS CITY, Mo. — An Overland Park teenager who was arrested after pointing a finger gun at classmates will enter diversion, according to the Johnson County District Attorney’s Office.

Under the diversion agreement, which did not need to be signed off by a judge, the eighth-grader could have a felony criminal threat charge dismissed if she meets certain requirements and completes the program.

The Westridge Middle School student was arrested on Sept. 18 after directing a finger gun at several other students.

The District Attorney’s Office said Tuesday that she was charged with making a criminal threat for comments that she made during the incident, not the actual act of pointing a finger gun.

Overland Park police made the decision to arrest the 13-year-old girl after she was questioned by school officials and a school resource officer.

A spokesperson for the Shawnee Mission School District said after the incident that the student’s arrest “was wholly unrelated to any district policy.”
