KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Phillip Stanley was found guilty of first degree murder Thursday by a jury in Johnson County, Kansas.

Stanley was convicted in the shooting death of his stepfather, Henry Gates, on July 19, 2017, near 92nd Street and Nieman Road in Overland Park.

Stanley and Gates were involved in a disturbance at the residence that resulted in a 911 call.

Arriving officers heard five to seven gunshots inside the residence and took cover before Stanley emerged and was taken into custody. Officers then found Gates dead inside.

Stanley will be sentenced Oct. 17.

Gates, who was 62 when he died, leaves behind two children, Myisha and Geraldine; a wife, Rose, and an ex-wife, Neshell.
