KANSAS CITY, Mo. — For the second time this month, the Overland Park Police Department is mourning the death of an officer.

Detective Brian Hampton, a 27-year veteran of the department, passed away, according to a post on social media.

Before joining the police force, Hampton served in the United State Army and Operation Desert Storm.

During his time with OPPD, Hampton had many roles.

He served as a patrol officer, SWAT team member and was part of the investigations and community policing units.

In April, he was assigned as a FBI task force detective.

OPPD said Hampton received numerous awards throughout his career.

People who knew him “described him as full of life and laughter,” OPPD wrote in its post.

Hampton leaves behind a wife and five children.

Police say his death was not in the line of duty.
