KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Recent wet weather throughout the Kansas City metro means you've probably seen a number of mushrooms growing in your yard.
The University of Kansas Medical Center says parents have been calling with concerns their children might accidentally eat these mushrooms.
Doctors say most varieties of the fungus will give you food poisoning symptoms for about 24 hours.
The bigger problem, however, lies in a variety of white mushrooms, which doctors say can cause serious liver damage.
"The bottom line is, if you've eaten a mushroom and you don't know what it is -- if you're having symptoms or your kids ate it -- call the Poison Control Center," said Stephen Thorton, the director of toxicology at the University of Kansas. "We'll walk you through it. Sometimes you don't have to go to the hospital, sometimes you do, and we want to help you figure that out."
If you need the Poison Control Center, call 800-222-1222.
