UPDATE: September 25, 6:30 a.m. | The Kansas City, Missouri Police Department originally reported the victim was a pedestrian, that has been corrected to say it was a bicyclist.
The preliminary investigation indicates a bicyclist was eastbound on independence Avenue. As the bicyclist entered the intersection at Hardesty Avenue, he changed lanes and entered the westbound lane.
At that point, a white pickup truck traveling westbound on Independence Avenue struck the bicyclist head-on.
The pickup driver fled the scene in an unknown direction.
EMS arrived and declared the bicyclist deceased.
The investigation is ongoing.
