KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A Kansas City, Kansas, neighborhood is now part of the National Park Services Rivers, Trails and Conservation Assistance program.

The Quindaro Townsite in KCK will receive preservation support from the nonprofit, according to a release from the office of Sen. Pat Roberts.

“I’m glad to see the National Parks Service’s commitment to preserving Quindaro through the Rivers, Trails and Conservation Assistance program,” Roberts, a Kansas Republican, said in a statement. “I look forward to seeing future generations of Kansans visiting the site so they can learn the prominent role Quindaro played in stopping the spread of slavery during the 1800s.”

In February, Quindaro received a National Commemorative Site designation, which will “foster more investment and preservation at the site,” according to the statement.

KCK native and Grammy-nominated music producer Joseph Macklin visited the Old Quindaro Museum in August and was inspired to help raise funds to preserve it.

Abolitionists founded the area, which was part of the Underground Railroad, in 1857 and archaeologists uncovered it in the 1980s.
